Simple does not mean basic

A French manicure is one of the hardest things to do well. The smile line has to be symmetrical across ten nails, the white has to sit at the right depth for the length of the nail, the pink has to be sheer enough to look like skin and dense enough to hide imperfections. There is nowhere to hide a shaky hand on a French.

The same is true for a single colour. A gel polish manicure looks expensive when the cuticle area is clean, when the polish stops a hair's width from the skin with no flooding, when the free edge is capped, and when the shape is the same on both hands.
